The device is connected in parallel to the electrical panel: it doesn't sit in the path of the power that feeds your loads. For safety, installation is done with the power off, at a time scheduled with you, usually at night.
What is harmonic distortion?
Grid power should be a perfect 60 Hz wave. Electronic equipment such as drives, power supplies, LEDs and UPS units feeds currents back into the grid at multiple frequencies, such as 300 Hz (the 5th harmonic). Added together, they distort the wave.
That distorted wave turns into heat, vibration and losses: motors overheat, boards burn out, breakers trip and the meter records more consumption than the useful work actually done.
